How to Read an Ingredient List for Reactive Skin

Front-of-pack claims can be helpful, but they rarely tell you the whole formulation story. Terms such as "gentle," "natural" and "dermatologist-tested" don't each correspond to one universal formulation standard, so it's worth looking beyond the headline. The ingredient list gives you one important part of that picture — though not the whole thing. For reactive skin, learning to read it properly is one of the most useful skills you can build.
This article covers how ingredient lists actually work, what they can and can't tell you, what to scan for first, and where common shortcuts — like "check the first half of the list" — fall short of the real rule.
The one rule that actually governs the list
Under UK and EU cosmetics regulation, ingredients present at 1% or above must be listed in descending order of concentration. Within that portion of the list, ingredients appear from higher to lower concentration by weight at the time they're added to the formula.
Below 1%, the rule changes: ingredients can appear in any order. This is the part most ingredient-reading advice glosses over — "check if it's in the first half of the list" is a reasonable rough guide, but it isn't the actual rule, and it can mislead you. An ingredient sitting near the bottom of a long list could be present at 0.9%, or it could be one of ten different ingredients all under 1%, listed in no particular order relative to each other.
In many formulas, the earlier ingredients account for a substantial proportion of the product — but there's no reliable "first five" or "first half" rule. The number of ingredients above 1% varies considerably between products, and position alone doesn't tell you how much of anything is actually there.

What an ingredient list can't tell you
An ingredient list tells you what's present — but not the complete behaviour of the finished formula. It usually doesn't tell you the exact concentration, final pH, ingredient quality or grade, how ingredients interact with each other, the delivery system, or whether a product will feel comfortable on your specific skin.
This matters because seeing one familiar ingredient — whether it's one you've reacted to before or one you're specifically avoiding — isn't enough on its own to conclude that a whole product will be gentle, or unsuitable. The complete formula matters more than any single line on the label. What to scan for first
For reactive skin, a handful of categories are worth checking for on every single product, regardless of what the front of the pack promises:
- Parfum or aroma. Perfume and aromatic compositions may appear as "parfum" or "aroma." Certain fragrance substances must also be named individually when the relevant labelling thresholds and market rules are met — which means an ingredient list may identify some fragrance components individually without revealing the complete composition of the fragrance blend.
- Essential oils, by their own names. Essential oils are listed under their own INCI names rather than simply as "parfum." If you specifically want to avoid them, look for botanical names too — lavandula angustifolia (lavender), melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary), and citrus oils are some of the most common. Don't rely on the absence of the word "parfum" alone.
- Alcohol denat. or SD alcohol. Where it sits in the list is a genuine clue — appearing early suggests a meaningful concentration — but remember the 1% rule above: position alone doesn't confirm how much is actually there.
- Known allergies or previous reactions. If you have a confirmed reaction to a specific ingredient, checking the full INCI list — not just the front-of-pack summary — is the most reliable way to catch it under an unfamiliar name.
Plant oils and fatty-acid profile
Plant oils differ substantially in their fatty-acid composition. Some research suggests that oils with a higher proportion of oleic acid may interact less favourably with barrier function than oils richer in linoleic acid — particularly relevant for skin that's also flaky-prone, where barrier disruption can play a role. But the evidence doesn't allow the suitability of a finished cosmetic to be predicted from one INCI name alone.
Argan and marula oils are generally oleic-dominant. Rosehip oil is usually linoleic-dominant and shouldn't be placed automatically in the same category, despite that assumption being common. In every case, concentration, processing, product format and the complete formula matter more than fatty-acid profile alone — this is formulation context to be aware of, not a pass-or-fail rule for judging a product from its ingredient list. An INCI name decoder
Ingredients are listed using INCI names — the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — which don't always match the common name you'd recognise. Some of the ones that come up most often:

Where "gentle" and "natural" mislead
Neither "gentle" nor "natural" is a regulated cosmetic term with one fixed ingredient standard behind it. Plant origin doesn't, by itself, establish that an ingredient will be better tolerated — natural and synthetic ingredients both need to be assessed on their identity, concentration, purpose and role within the complete formula.

A simple way to scan a new product
- Read from the beginning of the list to understand the main formulation base, remembering that the exact point where ingredients fall below 1% usually isn't identifiable.
- Look for "parfum" or "aroma," and separately for any essential oils or botanical extracts you already know you avoid.
- Note where alcohol denat. sits, without trying to calculate an exact percentage from position alone.
- Check for anything you have a known allergy or confirmed previous reaction to.
- Consider the product format: an ingredient in a rinse-off cleanser is a different exposure to the same ingredient in a leave-on cream, since contact time with the skin differs significantly.
- Judge the full formula and your own experience — not one isolated ingredient.
Trying a small amount on a limited area before broader use may help you observe immediate tolerability, although it can't guarantee a later reaction won't occur. Common questions about reading ingredient lists
Are ingredients always listed in order of concentration?
Only above 1%. Ingredients present at 1% or more must be listed in descending order of concentration. Below that threshold, they can appear in any order, so position alone isn't a reliable guide for lower-concentration ingredients.
How can I identify added fragrance or aromatic ingredients?
Check for "parfum" or "aroma" anywhere on the list, and separately check for essential oil names — lavandula angustifolia, melaleuca alternifolia, citrus oils and similar botanical names. Essential oils are listed under their own names rather than as fragrance, so it's worth checking for both.

What if I have a confirmed contact allergy?
If a dermatologist or allergy specialist has identified a specific contact allergen, use the exact names — and any related substances — they've advised you to avoid. Botanical and fragrance-allergen names can be difficult to recognise on a label, so ask a qualified professional if you're ever unsure.
